Dr. Col Kiza Besigye has acted the government under the ministry of education and sports over the new directives that were issued to close all the schools by 25th November in order to control the spread of Ebola in children and in the country at large.
On Monday, cabinet endorsed the proposal by the Minister of Health, Jane Ruth Aceng to close schools early for the third term due to the Ebola outbreak in the country.
While addressing the press at the People’s Front for Transition (PFT) at the FDC party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Besigye said it was not right to cut short third term by two weeks unless when the ministry is saying that in those two weeks ebola is not spreading in schools within those two weeks.
“Education is the only way people can survive and so we can’t leave it to Mrs. Museveni and the other members of the ministry unless when they are telling us that in two weeks there will be no increase in ebola cases,” Besigye said.
Dr.Besigye furthermore threatened to mobilize parents all over the country to form an association to fight for the education of their children in Uganda.
“We are going to be calling on parents nationally to fight for their children because as per now parents are organized around schools and that can not impact policies that are made in the country,” Besigye added.
Besigye argued that the closure of schools is not an education crisis but an economic crisis like it was a case during the COVID-19 pandemic.
