HEALTH REPORT:
The Southern Africa state of Botswana is experiencing a serious shortage of condoms likely to increase HIV infections among the population.
The revelations were made on Thursday by the country’s assistant minister of health and wellness Sethomo Lelatisitswe on the floor of parliament while responding to questions raised by members of parliament on the same.
According to Sethomo, the challenge of condom shortages was first experienced in August 2021 and has persisted to date.
He however said that government is expecting a donation of condoms from development partners within this week.
The Selibe Phikwe West MP. Dithapelo Keorapetsse raised a concern during the plenary tasking the minister to explain if he was aware of the extent of the shortages of condoms, when it was first experienced and how government intends to address the problem.
Our Parrots UG correspondent at Botho University said that the crisis has greatly affected sex workers and the youth in Gaborone, Botswana capital city who are at the high risk of acquiring HIV.
The anonymous source who talked to our correspondent urged government to address the challenge in a shortest time possible.
