Taxi and bus drivers and all other public transport owners have been warned not to extort money from the passengers.
While speaking to the press, the minister for ICT Chris Baryomunsi warned that drivers and public transport operators may overmilk Ugandans by hiking transport costs following President Y k Museven’s lifting of lockdown restrictions on all public and private transport.
Baryomunsi advised the public transport owners not to increase the transport fee as it may land them into trouble.
On Friday, President Museveni in his nation address about partial lifting of the 42 days lockdown directed that public transport reopen on Monday.
Drivers across the country are so anxious about doing their work again as they have been hungry for it. This has prompted minister Baryomunsi to warn them against hiking transport fares.
It is recalled that after imposing 42 days lockdown in June, taxi and bus operators especially in Kampala doubled transport fares as students and other individuals were travelling back to upcountry. This attracted public outcry and intervention of head of state house Anti-corruption unit, Lt Col Edith Nakalema arresting and stopping them from overcharging passengers.
Will all the public transport owners and drivers observe what has been given to them?
