Government has further extended the term of office for Local Council 1 and 2 to more six months.
This was disclosed by the minister of state for ICT, Godfrey Kabyanga during an engagement with the media.
According to the minister, cabinet on December 18 approved this extension and will take effect on January 5. He added that elections for new leaders will be conducted in July, 2024.
Minister Kabyanga said the extension was due to administrative obstacles but was quick to note that the decision is meant to enable proper and valuable preparations for a clean and smooth election come next year.
However, there are reports alleging discrepancies and inconsistencies at the Electoral Commission regarding the number of villages and parishes where polls are to be conducted something that could have caused the extension.
This is not the first time government extends the term of office for Local Council leaders since its expiration on July 10.
Government through the Local Government ministry and the elections regulatory body (EC) have hitherto claimed lack of adequate funds to conduct local council 1 and 2 elections and also the Women Council elections following expiration of their tenure in August 2022.
But, minister Kabyanga assured Ugandans that the elections will be conducted by July 3, 2024.
