“Sam is a Ugandan and doesn’t need anybody’s permission to come back to Uganda and he will return!” said John Kikonyogo, the deputy spokesperson of the FDC.

This is amid claims that there is a secrets plot to block Sam Mugumya from being returned to Uganda from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where he has been detained for 8 years.

But, speaking to journalists at Najjanankumbi on Monday, the Forum for Democratic Change(FDC) deputy spokesperson John Kikonyogo revealed means to process travel documents for Mugumya are underway noting that nobody will block him from returning to his country.

Mugumya has been in detention for eight years in DRC since October 21st, 2014 on allegations of illegal entry into that country. He was arrested alongside four others and separately charged.

Sam Mugumya, FDC activist who has been released out of DRC jail after 8yrs.

Last year, the DRC court tried and sentenced Mugumya to eight years to Ndolo Military Prison including the first seven years he had spent in detention after he was linked to M23 rebel group in Eastern DRC. He served his sentence which he completed last week on Friday and he is set to come back to Uganda after a long wait for justice. However, his other four co-accused are still held in Congolese detentions.

Commenting on the release out of Sam Mugumya, the Buhweju county MP Francis Mwijukye also known as “MP Waitu, Owaitu Buziima” , a member of the FDC and two times co-arrest of Mugumya in two different cases including a treason case that was later dismissed hailed FDC for not neglecting Mugumya while he was in prison.

“We have been in contact with Mugumya since the time of his incercaration, conviction, trial and provided legal support. Mugumya is safe and waiting to return,” MP Mwijukye said

First forward, the FDC also condemned abuse of rights of Ugandans who are taken into incercaration for a long time without being arraigned before court for trials.

They further condoled the death of Jakaana Sulaiman Nadduli, son of Abdul Nadduli former minister without portfolio. Jakaana died last night (at around 3am) at Orient Medical clinic in Wobulenzi Town where he was rushed after his health conditions worsened. He has been reportedly unwell from the time he was involved in a road accident in March 2022.
