The Returning Officer Kasese District Atwijukire Ismeail has declared Mujungu Thembo as the duly elected Member of Parliament for Busongora County South constituency, Kasese District.
Mujungu scored 12,088 votes against Jackson Mbaju of NUP who scored 6,866 while Aloysious Kighema Baguma of the FDC became third with 5,564 votes.
Other candidates like Mulindwa David Isimbwa (independent) obtained 2093 votes, Businge Benadet got 84 votes while DP’s Bagiire Doreen scored only 32 votes.
Mujungu was therefore declared a winner after he obtained the highest number of the votes cast than any other candidate.
According to Atwijukire, 26,727 were valid votes cast for candidates of the 27,126 total number of ballots papers counted.
The total number of the rejected (invalid) ballot papers were 399 while 32 was a total number of the spoilt ballot papers.
However, the election results have been rejected by the opposition parties in the race which argue that the election was marred by mitary violence, voter intimidations, ballot stuffing among others.
Earlier before the closing of polls, the FDC candidate Alosius Kighema was brutally arrested and beaten to pulp at Katunguru playground polling station after he attempted to question and further stop the security officers in uniform who he allegedly found staffing ballots despite not being voters in the area.
Similarly, FDC officials including party President Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat, Hon.kaginda, Hon.Francis Mwijukye and Hon. Joan Alobo intercepted a Lorry truck that was ferrying voters from Busongora North to come and vote for NRM candidate.
“We have intercepted and arrested NRM’s Sowedi kitanywa together with his non voters, who were being carried from Busongora North to Kalusandara SDA polling station in Busongora South.” FDC said
Its not yet clear if the FDC or NUP will challenge the results in court.
