About 11.7% in 10000 live births in the country are affected by spina bifida condition, state minister for disability affairs said.
Minister Asamo Hellen Grace made the revelation during an engagement with the media at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala.
She said the condition is a significant public health concern in Uganda and it is estimated that
Asamo noted that limited access to services, lack of awareness and information are among the challenges affecting spina bifida and hydrocephalus patients in Uganda.
“We shall carry out awareness campaigns to reach to a wider audience , raise awareness and promote understanding of Spina bifida and hydrocephalus issues
Uganda will commemorate World SPINA BIFIDA day on Wednesday 25th October 2023.
The theme of this year’s celebrations is “Accessibility for All: Empowering Lives,Embracing Differences”
“This years theme aligns strongly with the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations, particularly SDG4,(quality Education), SDG 3 ( Good Health and well- being and SDG 10 ( Reduced Inequalities ). It also reflects the resolutions made at the Global Summit towards the Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities ( CRPD) and is in line with Uganda’s National Development (Plan NDP3).” Asamo said
