Recent releases from detention have reported allegations of anal rape and police brutality, including one individual who claimed to have been sodomized by police officers while in custody.
The yet to identify releases who formed part of the group that was arrested for participating in the Anti-Corruption protests in Kampala claim they were sodomized by a male police officer in custody. Another individual, opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) stalwart reported similar abuse, including having his teeth knocked out recently.
“Some of the released boys say that they were subjected to anal rape (‘sodomised’) by police officers while in custody. Another NUP young man raised the same complaint upon release recently, on top of his teeth also being knocked out,” read an X post on Makerere University lecturer, Cartoonist Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo in parts.
The UPF has denied the allegations, dismissing them as propaganda aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the police force.
In a statement, UPF Spokesperson Rusoke M. Kituuma said, “The accusations against the UPF are unfounded and appear to be part of an ongoing propaganda campaign against the institution. We implore you to desist from spreading false narratives and misleading propaganda that only serves to tarnish the reputation of the police force.”
He emphasized police commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity and professionalism. However, human rights groups and opposition leaders are calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.
