Uganda Police Force have refuted with contempt allegations by the Uganda Journalists Association – UJA that journalist Dickson Mubiru has been arrested for attacking the first family.
“The allegations that the reasons for his arrest is as a result of asking the president a question in the recent media engagement is not true,” said Police
Earlier on this day, a social media post purported to UJA made circulations on the internet alleging that journalist Mubiru was arrested on the orders of the state house for asking president Museveni questions on the ongoing abductions of citizens when the president was engaging with journalists recently.
But, SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson says that UJA not drag the president’s name into Mubiru’s case.
According to Onyango, the journalist who also doubles as the Managing Director of Ono ye Bwiino News Publications which also runs the Grape Vine online Publications was today arrested by Police on allegations of criminal defamation.
“A general inquiry file was opened at Kiira Division to investigate allegations that he defamed Mr. Hamis Kiggundu in his various publications,” explains SSP Onyango.
It is alleged that Mubiru was earlier informed about the charges and he agreed to settle the matter amicably with the complainant which he did not comply to.
“He met the complainant and the Detectives who were investigating the case. The complainant agreed that he would withdraw the case on the advice of Police. The detectives advice that since the complainant made a statement at Police, Mr. Mubiru’s statement also be recorded.” Police noted
Police says that they have been trying to trace for Mubiru until today when he was arrested.
Onyango told reports that Mubiru’s statement will be recorded and the file submitted to State Attorney for perusal and legal advice.
