Following social media photos and videos that circulated over the weekend, police have confirmed the arrest of a suspect alleged to have set ablaze her cousin sister and another man who had visited her home.
The tragic incident happened in Jinja Kawempe Zone ‘A’ Kawempe Division, Kampala when fire broke out from one of the apartments belonging to Grace Sanyu, two people were killed in the fire.
The deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire identified the deceased as Patricia Arinda, 24 and Kajumba, 27.
In a circulating social media post, it is alleged that the female victim identified as Patricia was invited to a non existing Birthday party at the host’s house where she was joined with her male friend little did they know they were meeting their death. The post further alleges that the owner of the rented double unit room only identified as Keitesi had gone out when the fire razed the apartment. However, she is suspected to have set the room on fire.
Twist of Events
The suspect reportedly got a shock and was rushed to a nearby clinic for first aid and this is where police found her.
Upon interrogations, she told police that she received the two visitors on Thursday morning and the fire broke out later that evening.
“She informed us that the visitors went to her place in the morning and the fire broke out later that evening while the visitors were still in the house,” ASP Owoyesgyire said.
This publication later learned that the suspect was referred to Kawempe hospital for further management under security surveillance.
Police together with officials from the National Building Review Board, UMEME and other stake holders visited the scene of the crime for further examination to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
Evidence collected by police indicate that; “Whereas the tenant had a gas cooker, it was in a store and it remained intact plus the contents of the store. More details about the investigation will be availed as soon as possible,” ASP Owoyesigyire said on Saturday.
He added that statements were recorded from the witnesses and bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem.
