Two people have been confirmed dead in a single fatal accident that occured along Kanungu – Kabale road on Wednesday.
The motor vehicle registration number UBM 878R Isuzu white in color which was traveling from Kanungu reportedly overturned several times after the driver lost control. The accident occurred on December 27, 2023 at around 22:00hrs at Ahakatindo Karuhanga in Rutenga Hill along Kanungu-Kabale road in Kanungu district.
The Kigezi region police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate who confirmed the accident said the driver lost control of the vehicle which was loaded with 11 passengers.
He said two people including Tumwebaze vanice 60 and Atuhaire Mercy 45, died on spot while nine others sustained serious injuries.
Maate identified the injured victims as Musinguzi Amos, 25, Twinamatsiko Joshua 25, Kanyesigye Medard 35, Musinguzi Edison 34, Asiimwe Monica 29, Tumuhimbise Gabriel 36, Namanya Promise 21, Obedi 18, and another only identified as Dick, 17, all residents of Kihihi Kanungu.
Police said the driver of the vehicle is on the run.
The victims were rushed to Katate health centre IV for treatment while the bodies were delivered to Katate HCIV Mortuary pending Postmortem.
Maate said the motor vehicle is still at the scene pending to be towed to Police for IOV inspection as inquiries into the cause of the accident are underway.
