The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has declared Sarah Aguti Nyangori as their official flag bearer for the Dokolo Woman MP seat.
Nyangkori went through unopposed after two other candidates namely Josephine Acen Okullu and Anna Okwir stepped down in her favour. This was during a district conference to elect the party flag bearer held earlier today afternoon at Dokolo Catholic Parish.
Nyangkori is not new in UPC and Uganda’s politics. She in the 2021 elections contested for the same seat but lost to Celia Ogwal (now the late) who obtained 32,223 votes. NRM’s Janet Adongo Elau became second with 16,880 votes and Nyangkori became third after she garnered only 10,460 votes.
In attendance was the Party President Hon. Jimmy Akena, Regional leadership including Regional Vice Chairperson of Lango sub region Comrade Chris Ongom, Party Leaders from both Dokolo and the entire Lango.
Speaking to journalists, Christine Acen Atia one of the contenders who stepped down for Nyangkori, also the DEO for Amolatar District asked Nyangkori to keep the legacy left by late MP Cecilia Atim Ogwal.
UPC becomes a second party to unveil their candidate for the vacant Dokolo district Woman MP seat after the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) which unveiled their candidate, Dr. Alwoc RoseMary Ogwal daughter to late MP Cecilia Ogwal on Wednesday last week.
Other political parties like NUP, DP have announced expression of interest for eligible members and are yet to declare their candidates. At least 14 individuals are eyeing the Dokolo Woman MP seat the majority of whom include independent candidate. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has reportedly picked Janet Adongo Elau as their first runner in the by-election but it’s likely to go into a primaries or mutual dialogue because several other members have expressed interest in this seat.
The declaration of the UPC candidate, Sarah Aguti Nyangkori rebuffs comments by the FDC that they’re in talks with Hon. Jimmy Akena and other leaders of forces of change to have a single opposition candidate.
The electoral commission has scheduled by,-election for Dokolo Woman MP on Thursday 21st March, 2024.
