University of St Joseph’s Mbarara has clarified on the reports of closure of lack of university Charter.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening which was seen by Parrots Media, the University stated that the roadmap to attain the university is in its final stages.

“This is to inform anyone who could have stumbled on such information to know that USJM last year 2022 submitted application for a charter and has a clear roadmap towards its final attainment,” read the statement in parts.

Last week, the National Council for Higher Education released a list of over 30 universities at a risk of closure for lack of university Charter. The list included the Catholic church funded University of Saint Joseph Mbarara (USJM) based at Nyamitanga hill, Nyamitanga division in Mbarara City.

“In 2018, we requested the universities, which are provisionally licensed to produce road maps towards applying for charter status, regrettably, not long after that, a number of them produced them but as you are aware in 2020, we had the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said. Prof. Mary Okwakol , ED NCHE.

Prof. Okwakol said that they are studying the road maps of institutions which have already submitted their roadmpas urging those which have not submitted to do so by March.

NCHE act provides that a provisionally licensed university only holds a provision status for at least three years. Under the roadmap for charter acquisition, the institution indicates the time frame it intends to acquire the charter, when it will be ready for vetting as well as the self-assessment report, showing the future progresses of the institution, among others.

USJM has asked members of the public who could have been stbled by the closing reports to treat reports with the contempts it reserves.

“Please shun such obstructive information as we: “Foster excellence and integrity,” said the University in a statement.
