Police in Ntungamo is investigating circumstances under which a 110-year-old man hacked his wife to death using a curved spear weapon.

The suspect, Dominic Babiiha, a resident of Kahunga 1 in Ntungamo district, is said to have hacked his wife, Constansio Bakasisha, 109, to death over conjugal rights.

The incident happened on December 15, at around 7am in Kahunga 1 village, Ntungamo district.

According to Rwizi police spokesperson, Samson Kasasiira, the couple is said to have had a toxic marriage and sleeping in separate rooms.

“A night before the fateful incident, the couple had supper together and the suspect called his wife to bed which she rejected complaining of poor health and cough,” police reported.

It has since been established that the suspect jealously woken up the following morning, and entered into another room where the wife was laying asleep and hacked her using the curved spear weapon.

During the scuffle, one of the grandchildren that stays with the couple went to check in the bedroom and the suspect forced the child out. This prompted the child to make an alarm that attracted neighbours.

It’s is further established that when the neighbors came, they found Bakasisha already dead while the husband, Babiiha was unconsciously hiding in his bedroom with a bottle of agro-chemical substance next to him.

Police was informed about the incident and arrived at the scene of the crime. The suspect was rushed to Itojo hospital for treatment whereas the body of the deceased was taken to the hospital mortuary for a postmortem.

It has since been established that the motive of the killing was established to be jealousy, after the suspect accused his wife of denying him, his conjugal rights.

Kasasiira has condemned the marital murder noting that police does not tolerate such acts of gender based violence and domestic violence. He appealed to married couples to always use local authorities and police to resolve family issues.
