OBITUARY
Major John Bashaija Kazoora, a distinguished Ugandan leader, author, and former Member of Parliament, husband to Hon Kabashirira Naome the Rushenyi county member of parliament in Ntungamo district. Kazoora passed away at his home on April 21, 2025. He was 67 years old. His death marks the loss of a towering figure in Uganda’s political and military history.
Major Kazoora served as a Member of Parliament for Kashari County in Mbarara District during the 6th and 7th Parliaments (1996–2006). A founding member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), he played a pivotal role in shaping Uganda’s multiparty democracy. He also served as the FDC Secretary for Defense, Security, and Internal Affairs, and was a key figure in the Parliamentary Advocacy Forum (PAFO).
Known for his courage and integrity, Major Kazoora was a vocal advocate against corruption and a staunch defender of democratic principles. His memoir, “Betrayed by My Leader”, published in 2012, offered a candid account of his experiences in Ugandan politics and his disillusionment with President Museveni’s leadership.
Before his political career, Major Kazoora served in the National Resistance Army (NRA), contributing to Uganda’s liberation struggle. However, he later became a critic of the regime, advocating for governance reforms and the rule of law.
The FDC and other political leaders have expressed profound sorrow at his passing, highlighting his immense contributions to Uganda’s political landscape. His legacy as a principled leader and a voice for justice will be remembered by many.
