The court magistrate sitting in Nabweru Wakiso on Tuesday sent to jail Simon Shimanya to 17yrs in prison for allegedly murdering his wife Violet Kakai also a nurse at International Hospital Kampala – IHK.
Shimanya had earlier pleaded guilty on his own plea something that forced Patrick Omoko, the Chief Magistrate to be lenient to him.
“He is a middle aged man of 46 years with children left behind by the deceased to take care of. It is therefore not true that he cannot reform and return to take care of the children who have already lost one parent,”Amoko said.
The magistrate judged that the 17 year sentence starting with the day of sentence is enough for the convict.
It is recalled that on the night of August,1,2020, Violet Kakai, 35, a nurse at IHK was hit several times with an axe by her husband, Simon Shimanya, a teacher by profession in front of her children at the couple’s home in Bbumbu –Kiteezi, Wakiso District following a long domestic wrangle.
Shimanya took on heels and was later arrested in Isingiro district in a joint operation conducted by the State Anti-Corruption Unit and security agencies. He admitted guilty of the acts saying that for a donkey’s years he had suspected his wife of having an affair with a one Robert Sebuufu.
He told detectives that on the fateful day, Sebuufu dropped Kakai home and he tried to hit him(Sebuufu) the deceased intervened and he accidentally axed her to death.
The magistrate said Shimanya is free to appeal against the sentence in 14 days time.
