The Mbarara City Traders Association (MBACITA) has vowed to convene an urgent meeting to press for clear information on the stalled Katete bridge repairs, which have left businesses in limbo. Chairperson Ssezi Mwijuka Simon expressed frustration over the lack of progress despite repeated requests to city authorities, emphasizing the dire need for a solution.
The bridge’s closure has severely impacted businesses in Katete, with many facing closure due to reduced sales. Mwijuka has appealed to concerned citizens, suppliers, and stakeholders to join the meeting on 20th June to find a lasting solution, even suggesting a temporary bridge funded by traders while awaiting a long-term government fix.
“The business community in Mbarara is the backbone of the city’s economy, and we deserve to know what is happening with the bridge repairs,” Mwijuka said. “We have requested information several times, but the city authorities have not provided any clear answers. We cannot continue to operate in the dark, ” said Mwijuka
The meeting aims to bring together traders, suppliers, and city officials to discuss the issue and find a way forward. Seith emphasized that the traders are willing to contribute to a temporary solution to alleviate the suffering of businesses in Katete.
“We are not asking for handouts; we are asking for a chance to survive,” Seith said. “If we can contribute to a temporary bridge, we will do so. We just need the government to provide a clear plan for a long-term solution.” Mwijuka added.
