Namugongo Martyrs Catholic Shrine – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accompanied by his wife Janet Kataaha Museveni, graced the Martyrs Day celebrations, congratulating Ugandans for their religious vibrancy and resilience amidst disease hazards like COVID-19.
The President shared his personal connection to the martyrs, recalling his presence at their canonization in 1986 and his declaration of Martyrs Day as a public holiday. He expressed gratitude to religious leaders for embracing NRM ideologies and promoting unity.
Drawing from the parable of the talents, President Museveni urged Ugandans to multiply their talents and work towards prosperity, emphasizing that poverty has no place in Christianity. He encouraged the youth to pursue African integration and promised to address corruption and integration in his upcoming state address.
The President also reiterated Uganda’s stance against homosexuality, honoring the martyrs’ faithfulness and encouraging Ugandans to emulate their example. He announced plans to construct a Martyrs commemoration project and thanked the gathering for sharing in the blessings of the martyrs.
This year’s celebration marked 60 years since the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs, a testament to Uganda’s rich religious heritage and the President’s commitment to promoting unity and prosperity.
