The government has been asked to equip schools with necessary facilities to improve on performance in ICT and science subjects.
Dan Odongo, the UNEB Executive Director said during the 2023 UACE results release ceremony on Thursday that many schools lack computers and printers which are required for practical examination which has affected candidates performance in ICT exams.
“Another area that requires urgent attention is ICT. Apart from the General Paper, candidates must offer Subsidiary Mathematics or Subsidiary ICT. Most schools are very ill-equipped in terms of computers and printers required for the practical examination, and this greatly impacts the acquisition of the skills and quality of work they present during the examination,” he said.
On Thursday, UNEB released results of 109,488 who sat for the 2023 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Examinations (UACE).
According to the released results, 52,452 candidates passed with 3 Principal passes, 28,191 with 2-Principal passes, and 18,624 had one principal pass. At least 9,225 candidates passed with one subsidiary while 996 students failed the exams.
UNEB further decried fewer numbers of girls offering science and mathematics subjects at A’level despite a gradual increase recorded in the previous sitting.
Odongo noted, “Female entries for the Sciences and Mathematics have remained lower than that of the males, consistent with the fact that overall female entry is lower than that of the males. The numbers are, however, rising as well.”
