Lawyers of the detained two opposition Members of Parliament Hon. Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya have expressed commitment to the justice of the legislators.
Shamim Malende, one of the lawyers in the cases against the legislators related to Masaka murders has said that they are committed to ensuring justice for the MPs as established in the laws of Uganda.
” As lawyers of the two legislators, we commit to ensuring that our clients are accorded justice as the law requires”, she said.
Malende was speaking to journalists at High Court Masaka after the hearing of the case against the legislators on Thursday.
The duo has been on remand over months after they were arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, and abetting terrorism related to the last year machette killings in Masaka.
They were arraigned to court today. However, court presided over by Christine Nantegge further remanded the duo to March 23, 2022.
Stateprosecutor Richard Birivumbuka told court that the state is still investigating on the legislator’s case and asked to have the charge sheet amended the next date.
This aroused anger from the legislator’s defense lawyer Shamim Malende who accuses the prosecution side of consuming court time.
The decision by Grade One Magistrate Christine Nantegge made Ssegirinya’s mother and his wife who were in court following proceedings breakdown into tears which caused chaos inside court.
