Nankabirwa warns women occupying bigger offices against family neglect

Hon.Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu minister for energy and mineral development has appealed to women in Uganda never to abandon their biological responsibilities as mothers however much they have acquired big offices and power.

Hon.Nankabirwa in her message to women as they celebrate 37 years of NRM liberation in Kakumiro, she appreciated the fact that NRM has promoted women emancipation and appealed to women not to misuse it to abandon their responsibilities.

“NRM has never removed women in the kitchen, we are still in the kitchen but this time round we are commanders. Seeing a woman as the minister of energy , the Vice President and prime minister all are women it does not mean to abandon our responsibilities as mothers,”Nankabirwa said.

However, Hon.Nankabirwa emphasized the need to counsel women that have come up in big offices in order for them not to abandon their biological responsibilities.

“There is a lot that needs to be done although we have achieved a lot as women and the most important thing is taking to women in power not to neglect their responsibilities as mothers. I am a mother and my husband can never turn into a mother so I have a responsibility to conceive and nature my baby. I will not throw away my baby to my husband because I have to work,” Nankabirwa added.

Since coming to power in 1986, Uganda’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) has made significant strides towards including women as partners in the country’s development and decision-making process.

Uganda also is the first African country to have appointed a woman as vice president and as per now even the prime minister of Uganda is a woman. The affirmative action policy has, for example, ensured that at least a third of legislative and civic positions were reserved for women.
