Tragedy struck Masibwe village, Buhumba parish, Katebwa Sub-County in Bunyangabu District following  devastating heavy rains on the night of March 12, 2025. The flooding claimed the lives of two children ,30 months old Muhindo Joat and 5 year old Mumbere Jamil. The torrential rains caused severe flooding, with debris rushing through the area, damaging homes and livelihoods.

Irene Nakasita the Red Cross communications officer said that according to preliminary findings by the Uganda Red Cross, 65 households in the community have been severely affected by the flooding. “Families are mourning their losses and grappling with the destruction left in the storm’s wake” confirmed Nakasita.

The Uganda Red Cross emergency response team is actively working on the ground, providing psychosocial support to bereaved and displaced families. The team is conducting rapid assessments to establish the full extent of the damage and issuing warnings to residents in vulnerable areas to avoid further loss of life.

In collaboration with the District Disaster Management Committee, plans are underway to compile a comprehensive report, which will be submitted to the Office of the Prime Minister for further action.

This incident underscores the need for robust disaster preparedness measures, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall and flooding, to safeguard lives and property.
