The opposition has called on President Yoweri Museveni to invite representatives of the “Generation Z” protesters to his official residence for a dialogue, rather than asking them to march to Kololo. John Baptist Nambeshe, the Opposition Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Manjiya County, made this suggestion during a parliamentary address on July 23, 2024.
Nambeshe emphasized that the opposition is willing to work with the protesters to address their grievances. He also encouraged the protesters to continue their efforts to bring about change in Uganda.
The call comes after President Museveni warned protesters against disrupting businesses and causing chaos during their planned march to parliament. Instead, he suggested they hold a peaceful demonstration at Kololo on a non-working day.
“If you want to protest , organise yourselves and match to Kololo on a non working day like Sunday but not moving on roads causing chaos and disrupting businesses on the road sides. I passed Bwaise and saw people with chairs trading on the roadsides , why do you want to disrupt them. Don’t be tempted to start those chaotic behaviors because we shall deal with you , you get cheap food and yet people out there are stuffing crying of hunger. You are playing with fire”, President Museveni told protesters on Saturday.
However, Robert Kyagulanyi, the former opposition presidential candidate, accused President Museveni of being a tyrannical leader and urged Ugandans to continue protesting against his government’s alleged brutality, corruption, and unfair taxation.
“People’s pockets are on fire heavy taxation, corruption and embezzlement. Museveni is the one playing with fire” said Kyagulanyi.
The situation in Kampala remains tense, with a heavy deployment of armed personnel and a heightened sense of uncertainty.”
